Dialog międzyreligijny, prowadzony przez Jana Pawła II od początku pontyfikatu, nie tylko otworzył nowy rozdział w historii stosunków chrześcijańsko-muzułmańskich, ale również przyczynił się do wielu pozytywnych zmian na Bliskim Wschodzie, w tym do nawiązania oficjalnych stosunków pomiędzy Stolicą Apostolską a Izraelem (1993) i Autonomią Palestyńską. Nie ulega wątpliwości, że przemyślane, systematyczne i nieprzerwane zaangażowanie Papieża w rozwiązywanie konfliktów bliskowschodnich niejednokrotnie pomogło w złagodzeniu napięć społeczno-politycznych i religijnych w tym rejonie. Pomimo wojen, które dla mieszkających tam ludzi powodują olbrzymie zniszczenia we wszystkich dziedzinach życia, dzięki wysiłkom Ojca Świętego społeczność międzynarodowa podejmowała i nadal podejmuje kolejne inicjatywy mające na celu stabilizację sytuacji w rejonie, a droga do pokoju wciąż pozostaje otwarta. To właśnie papieska wizja porządku politycznego na Bliskim Wschodzie opartego na zasadach moralnych i etycznych oraz olbrzymi wysiłek Jana Pawła II mający na celu jej urzeczywistnienie okazały się tym „światłem", które uratowało zarówno ten rejon, jak i cały świat przed wybuchem większego, bardzo złożonego w swej naturze lokalnego konfliktu, który mógłby się przerodzić w o wiele większy i groźniejszy, o trudnych do przewidzenia globalnych konsekwencjach.

There is no doubt that the sincere interreligious dialogue conducted by John Paul II from the beginning of his pontificate not only had opened a new chapter in the history of Christian-Muslim relations but also resulted in many positive changes in the Middle East, including the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Vatican and Israel and between the Vatican and the Palestinian Autonomy. Moreover, the systematic, persistent and tireless engagement of the Pontiff in resolving Middle Eastern conflicts contributed significantly to appeasing the socio-political and religious tensions in the area, so that despite the wars causing destruction in all spheres of life of the people living there, the international community undertook and still undertakes many consecutive efforts and initiatives that could stabilize the situation and keep the road to peace open. The Pope’s vision of a Middle Eastern political order based on moral principles and his tremendous effort to implement it proved to be the protector of “a light” that saved both the region and the entire world from the eruption of a large scale, complex local conflict with unpredictable global consequences. The book John Paul II, Islam and the Middle East: The Pope’s Spiritual Leadership in Developing a Dialogical Path for the New History of Christian-Muslim Relations by Dorota Rudnicka-Kassem is the result of many years of study and research on interreligious and intercultural dialogue. The work is a complex analysis of John Paul II’s spiritual leadership in developing a dialogical path for Christian-Muslim relations, an analysis discussing not only the features, aims and practice of such a path, but also exposing the implementation of dialogical means in resolving the Middle Eastern predicament and placing the Pope’s achievements on the historical continuum of Christian-Muslim encounters.
